Black Bear Spotted In SE KS

Kansas park officials say a black bear has been seen recently in southeast Kansas. David Jenkins, of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, says a black bear was spotted near the town of Weir on Saturday and on Sunday near Galena. He says it’s likely the same bear. Jenkins says black bears aren’t typically seen in Kansas, but their numbers have been growing in the Ozarks since Arkansas began a restoration effort 50 years ago.

One-Way Street Proposal Delayed for Two Weeks

No decision yet on whether Iola will change some streets around the middle school to one way. Last week, the council discussed a recommendation from the city adminstrator, who urged making East Street a westbound only street from First to Cottonwood. He also said it would be good to make Jackson Avenue one way eastbound between those roads.

The district is adding about 100 students to the middle school because of the attendance center shift, and the council wants to make traffic as safe as possible around the building. The decision was delayed to get public input, and Assistant City Administrator Corey Schinstock has reached out, asking that anyone who wishes to comment on the proposals call him at 345-4908 or email him,

Wilson County Injury Crash

A collision about five miles north of Fredonia yesterday resulted in two people from Iowa being airlifted to Wichita. The wreck happened on K-39 at the Harper Road intersection just before 2pm. Troopers say 27-year old Tyler Schoonover of Fredonia was southbound in a 1998 Mack Truck and failed to yield to a westbound Ford Pickup driven by an Iowa man. The large truck hit the smaller one in the side, causing the pickup to slide and roll into the ditch on the far side of the corner. The Iowa man and his wife were airlifted from the scene; Schoonover was not hurt.

KS Senate Asopt Tax Increase Legislation

The Kansas Senate adopted by the thinnest margin last night the largest tax increase in state history to close a budget deficit exceeding $400 million in the upcoming fiscal year. Nine Republican senators broke no-new tax pledges to put the measure over the top 21-17. As anticipated, none of the Senate’s eight Democrats voted for the bill. Nine Republicans turned thumbs down on the bill.

Prospects of the legislation surviving the political gauntlet in the House are unclear. Members of the House reconvene today after departing Topeka on Saturday once they approved legislation to block furloughs of 24,000 state employees.

Finally, an agreement on the long-running property tax dispute between Ash Grove Cement and the Neosho County Appriaser. The settlement resolves Ash Grove’s dispute that covered the years from 2012 through 2015. The taxing entities will have four years to repay a total of $6.5 million collected in 2012 and 2013, and Ash Grove will forego any interest on the overpaid taxes. Exactly how that money will be parceled out is still to be determined by the five government entities affected. The first-half tax payment made last December by Ash Grove has been accepted as payment of the company’s full obligation for 2014. The total valuation for 2015 taxes is agreed to be just over $66.5 million dollars.
